HENRY P. VANDER LINDE BAND AWARD

2013 is the seventh year the Holland American Legion Band has offered an award to honor our past director, Henry P. Vander Linde, who was "leader of the band" for 40 years. The annual $ 500 grant is to help area high school band students who have a serious interest in music to further their music education through music lessons or summer music camps.

The seventh annual Holland American Legion Band Henry P. Vander Linde Award winner is Patrick Redmond, a junior at Black River High School. Patrick is a trombone player who plays first chair in both the Symphonic Band and Jazz  Orchestra. He has been a member of the Grand Valley State University and Calvin College Honors Bands, and a member of the Holland Area Youth Orchestra. He has received an Outstanding Musicianship award at the Western Michigan University Jazz Festival. He also performed as the Tin Man in Black River's production of "The Wizard of Oz."

Patrick is using his award for private lessons during his senior year, and plans to study music at Western Michigan University after graduation from Black River. Congratulations Patrick!

Part of the Holland American Legion Band's mission is to encourage young musicians, even those who do not plan a career in music. In addition to offering this award each year to one individual who plans a career in music, we strongly encourage all high school and college students who are performing in school bands during the year to join us during the summer for our series of 10 weekly concerts in the Henry P. Vander Linde Band Shell in Kollen Park. We have an hour rehearsal each week prior to the concert, and perform in the park from 7:30-8:30 p.m.  We also encourage post-graduates of any age who still play or are just getting back into the enjoyment of playing an instrument to consider making the Holland American Legion Band a part of their activities. Contact us and let us know of your interest!
