This is the second year the Holland American Legion Band has offered a scholarship to honor our past director, Henry P. Vander Linde, who was the "Leader of the Band" for 40 of the band's 89 year existence. The annual $ 500 scholarship is to help high school band students who have a serious interest in music to further their music education through private lessons or summer music camps.

The applicants must submit a written statement of their interest in music, along with a letter of recommendation from their high school band director. Auditions are then held in January to coincide with M.S.B.O.A. District 10's Solo and Ensemble Festival.

The second annual Holland American Legion Band Henry P.VanderLinde Scholarship winner was trumpeter Shane Brandsen, a freshman at Holland Christain High School in Holland. Shane began playing a trumpet when he was two years old. (Okay, it was a plastic trumpet back then.) He plays in his school's concert and jazz bands, as well as playing in the Praise Band at his church. He has participated in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, and has attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. In addition to instrumental music, Shane enjoys singing, acting, and tennis.
