2009 is the third year the Holland American legion Band has offered an award to honor our past director, Henry P. Vander Linde, who directed the band for 40 of its 90 years. The annual $500 grant is to help high school band students who have a serious interest in music to further their music education through private lessons or summer music camps.The third annual Holland American Legion Band Henry P. Vander Linde Award winner was trumpeter Jeremy Young, a sophomore at Zeeland East High School.
Jeremy Young has played the trumpet since 4th grade. Along with being actively involved in many musical activities and ensembles, he has studied privately with Bruce Formsma, Richard Stoezel and Dorival Puccini. He was awarded 1st chair in the middle school Michigan All-State Bands in 2005 and 2006, as well as 1st chair in the Michigan High School All-State Band in 2007.
Jeremy played in the Holland Area Youth Orchestra during his 8th and 9th grade years, and this year has played with the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony. He attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for 2 summers and last year participated in the Grand Valley State University International Trumpet Seminar. In addition, as a ninth grader, Jeremy took 3rd place in the Skip Gates Concerto Competition.
Jeremy plans to use his award to again participate in the Grand Valley State University International Trumpet Seminar. Congratulations Jeremy!
